Short-Range Millimeter-Wave Imaging for Multilayer Objects

Traditional short-range millimeter-wave imaging methods will produce ripples-corrupted images when the imaged object consists of multiple layers. This is caused by the mutual interference of each layer's spreading image in the three-dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a new image reconstruction method suitable for multilayer objects. After obtaining the three-dimensional reflectivity image, a separation method is used to decompose the ensemble image into individual images corresponding to each layer. The reflectivity distribution and depth map are simultaneously extracted during this progress. We have conducted several experiments to verify the capability of our method to produce images free of ripple artifacts and retrieve the three-dimensional profile of the object. This contributes to the applications in non-destructive testing, security screening, etc..
