Fast System Level Model for Digital Twin Based Optimization of Naval Power and Energy System

In this paper a faster than real time model of an electric microgrid testbed is presented. The Fast System Level Model (FSLM) is a highly computationally efficient yet accurate model that tracks power and energy flow. The topology of the microgrid testbed being modeled emulates an all-electric naval power and energy distribution system. The FSLM is utilized as a Digital Twin (DT) model of the testbed to allow research into advancements that DT technology can bring about. Here we present four examples of the use of the FSLM for look-ahead simulation and for preemptive optimal control. Two examples of look-ahead simulation and two examples of control parameter optimization are presented. With advanced knowledge of system states and optimal control parameters for estimated load demand, the FSLM enables greater operator understanding of system status and performance and better, more efficient operation of the notional ship integrated power and energy systems.
