Organic Substrates for SiC-Based PEBB Power Modules: Challenges and Opportunities

A critical aspect of the modular, high-density PEBB concept is the integration of the H-bridges using advanced substrate materials. This paper gives a detailed review, report, and analysis of a new generation of organic substrate technology for high-current H-bridge modules used in power electronics building blocks (PEBBs). The opportunities and challenges associated with organic substrates are analyzed at the power module and converter level. Multi-objective simulation shows the layout, thermal, and weight performance tradeoffs that must be kept in mind when using organic substrates. Additionally, for the first time, the organic substrate design of the PEBB H-bridge is introduced and discussed.
