Developing Digital Twin for Transforming CNC Machine to Industry 4.0 for Remote Monitoring

The aim of the paper is to create a digital twin for CNC machines and to apply remote diagnosis to the Twin technology. Digital twins can be created based on real time data obtained from sensors mounted on machines rather than from a mathematical model. A CAD model is created for an existing Intelitek Promill 8000 machine which is imported to UNITY for real-time rendering of the machine for creating digital twins. Algorithms are developed in C and implemented in the UNITY engine to define the machine constraints and visualize real time motions of the CNC machine. The machine status is updated in real time with the digital twin created. An approach is presented to detect the actuator failures and machine sensor failures using the digital twin created based on external sensors integrated on the CNC machine and G codes of the process. The digital twin created is accessed on the internet enabling remote diagnosis.
