Development of a Smart Convenience Outlet with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Reader and Android Application for Power Monitoring, Control, and Protection of Electrical Home Appliances

This study presents a system that features power consumption monitoring per user, timer control, budget limit, automatic shutdown of standby appliances and provides protection from overloading, overvoltage and undervoltage. The prototype can be activated via an RFID card or mobile application. Each user has an account, and each account has a respective registered RFID card. The account and RFID card enable user identification which can aid in the fair distribution of electricity consumption and bill among roommates or users in an apartment or dormitory based on their actual appliance usage. A generated report is provided for both the users and the landlord. The system used PZEM-004T for measuring voltage and current. The percentage error computation was done on the current reading of the prototype and the clamp meter, in which the system has 95.15% to 99.94% accuracy in terms of current reading. On the other hand, the system has 99.30% to 99.90% accuracy in terms of voltage reading, in which the system voltage reading is compared to the reading of a multimeter. Given these features, the prototype can reduce excessive use of appliances, promotes fair distribution of electricity bill, and provides protection for overvoltage, undervoltage and overloading.
