IoMT-Based Biochip-Integrated Point-of-Care Testing for Smart Healthcare

With the present technological progress of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), there is a growing need for fast and efficient techniques to detect and screen any disease easily. Toward this end, in recent times, point-of-care testing (POCT) has emerged as a rapid, mobile, and instantaneous method of disease diagnosis. In this article, a biochip integrated POCT mechanism has been proposed that is based on digital microfluidic biochip (DMFB) technology. DMFB allows embedding miniaturized bio-laboratories in a chip and has turned as a leading solution in healthcare domain because of its high responsiveness and reconfigurability. The proposed circuit can be visualized as an IoMT based POCT device and can help prevent several noncommunicable diseases such as heart failure. For timely monitoring and diagnosis of the disease, a fog-based IoMT architecture is also presented in this article that alerts the patient’s family members as well as health-care professionals automatically through the use of smart phones. The designed biochip when integrated with IoMT technology can help monitoring and managing sudden lifestyle disease which will be a giant step toward a Smart Healthcare system. The proposed design has been implemented using FPGA Spartan-3E architecture and extensive simulation has been conducted using Xilinx 9.1 ISim. The performance of the analyzer have been proved to be accurate and in tandem with conventional methodologies applied in laboratories.
