Utility Scale Battery Energy Storage Modes of Operation implemented in Dubai

The integration of renewable energy sources into the power system is greatly facilitated by the use of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). In addition to providing direct support for the integration of variable renewable energy sources, ESS can offer a wide range of ancillary services to support grid operations and increase flexibility for grid operators. However, it is important to understand the capabilities and limitations of different battery storage technologies, particularly in regions with high temperatures such as Dubai. This study presents a full-scale implementation of a Sodium-Sulfur battery storage system that is directly connected to the grid and supports a Photovoltaic (PV) plant generation in Dubai. Various operation modes are tested and evaluated to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of the system. The potential for combining different operation modes to enhance grid operations and the effect of temperature on the performance of the inverter are also examined. The results indicate that the battery storage system is effective in supporting the grid through various operation modes and ancillary services, helping to ensure normal operations and maintain grid stability while mitigating the effects of PV system intermittency.
