Design and Cold-Test Measurement of a Novel Metamaterial Assisted Dual-Band Slow Wave Structure

A dual-band complementary electric split ring resonator (DB-CeSRR)-based metamaterial (MTM) slow wave structure (SWS) is developed that is capable of generating two frequencies in two different frequency bands, i.e., C and X-bands. The dual-band frequency generation is due to two slot lines in the DB-CeSRR unit cells, which are incorporated in a circular waveguide. The cold test experiment is performed to measure the transmission properties of the fabricated dual-band MTM SWS. The simulated and measured results confirm the operation of dual-band MTM SWS in two passbands from 6.1 - 6.8 GHz and 9.2 - 9.8 GHz below the cut-off frequency of the waveguide. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation predicts that the proposed dual-band MTM SWS based BWO yields an average RF powers of ~0.5 MW with conversion efficiency of ~18.3%.
