Control of Grid Synchronized Photovoltaic Fed Synchronous Reluctance Motor Drive for Water Pumping

In the absence of a grid, the grid-integrated solar photovoltaic array (SPVA) fed water pumping system operates in standalone mode. On the grid recovery, such a system must be synchronized with the grid to facilitate system reliability. A mixed second and third order generalized integrator (MOGI) based phase locked loop (PLL) to form mode transition for SPV based water pumping system integrated with the grid is presented in this paper. The presented MOGI eliminates the DC offset and lower-order harmonics. A MOGI-PLL is realized by applying the MOGI to a phase-locked loop (PLL), making it more flexible to different grid scenarios and power quality. Moreover, to reduce the cost and complexity, and to increase the reliability of the drive, a flux estimation-based method is utilized to predict the rotor position to develop control methodology for synchronous reluctance motor (SYRM). The effectiveness of the presented MOGI-PLL for mode transition control of grid synchronized SPVA-fed water pumping system is shown and validated using test data from a prototype in terms of starting, steady state, and dynamic behaviors.
