Synchronization of Switching Transitions in Parallel Modules of Integrated Modular Motor Drives for Common Mode Noise Reduction

The changing potential during switching transitions of power electronic devices causes common mode noise. Besides passive filters, there are space saving approaches, which actively reduce the common mode noise. One approach is to synchronize opposing switching transitions of power electronic devices with similar parasitic impedances. The synchronized opposing switching transitions generate opposing common mode noises, which reduce each other by superposition. This principle is often used in topologies with parallel structures. In most cases, two structures are operated invers, in which the control signals of both structures are strictly dependent from each other. Integrated Modular Motor Drives offer parallel topologies enabling the synchronization of opposing switching transitions. This paper presents a switching scheme to synchronize switching transitions with increased degree of freedom compared to an invers operation. The novel switching scheme allows different control signals in all parallel modules of Integrated Modular Motor Drives.
