Analytical Tool for Preliminary Design of Switched Reluctance Machine

The design of an electrical machine is a rigorous experience-based iterative process. Generally, the output torque equation of a machine, which depends on several empirical constants, is used to make the initial guess of machine dimensions, i.e., known as preliminary design, followed by multi-objective optimization for the desired requirements. The better the initial guess of machine dimensions, the lesser the effort required for optimization. The design process is more involved in the case of SRM due to its highly non-linear behavior. Typically, finite element-based software packages are used for preliminary design and optimization of SRM dimensions, which are time-consuming. In this paper, an analytical tool, independent of FEA, is developed for the preliminary design of SRM. The developed tool is used to design a 60-kW, 60000-rpm, and 600-V SRM. The design is validated through static and dynamic simulation of the machine at rated conditions.
