Weighted Caching Strategy for LEO Satellite Communication Systems

Caching services can be provided to global users when cache servers are mounted on low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites. However, it is difficult to apply the caching techniques used on terrestrial networks because the LEO satellite communication (SatCom) system is different from terrestrial networks. In this paper, we propose a weighted caching strategy using regional correlation for LEO SatCom systems. To be specific, we process real-world data and find that file popularity in neighboring regions tends to be more similar. A regional correlated system model reflecting these characteristics is designed and an appropriate caching strategy for this system model is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed weighted caching strategy outperforms conventional dynamic caching techniques.
