Modified L-shape Eight-Port Array Antenna for 5G Smartphone Application

An $8\times 8$ side frame multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna operates in the 3.5 GHz frequency, making it suitable for 5G communication applications. This design is based on eight modified L-shaped antenna elements that are positioned on the outer side of the frame. A modified T- slot is etched on the ground to provide a path for the generated surface currents. The antenna covers a bandwidth range between 3.37-3.65GHz. The proposed antenna has a dimension of $150\times 75\times 0.8\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}^{3}$ and a resonant frequency of 3.5 GHz covering a bandwidth of 280 MHz under −6 dB impedance bandwidth. A maximum gain of 4.2 dBi over the operational band and isolation between the adjacent radiating elements below −15 dB were achieved. Furthermore, an ECC value below 0.05 for any two-radiating element is obtained.
