Study on the Anti-overturning Performance and Improving Technology of Continuous Bridges with Single-column Piers Subjected to Extreme Vertical Eccentric Loads

Continuous girder bridges with single-column piers are widely used in urban viaducts and highways because of their advantages containing the beautiful type, space occupation and the full vision. However, the overturning resistance of continuous girder bridges with single-column piers is weak, and the overturning problem subjected to the eccentric load of heavy vehicles is more prominent, which may cause great loss of life and property. The anti-overturning stability of continuous girder bridges with single-column piers subjected to extreme vertical eccentric load is studied by establishing finite element model, and the influencing factors of anti-overturning performance of such as type of bridges are taken into research. The results show that the safety factor against overturning of continuous bridges with single-column piers may not meet the design requirement. Auxiliary columns are recommended to be added to the middle single-column piers, and the anti-overturning coefficient of the bridge subjected to the most unfavorable partial load can be significantly improved.
