Design and Implementation of a Surveillance System for Outdoor Construction Fields

In most outdoor construction fields, the owners hire security guards or install video surveillance systems to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering protected areas. However, these solutions are expensive and may not report instant events. In this work, we propose an intelligent surveillance that forms digital barriers to identify authorized personnel. The system contains a server and many network nodes. Network nodes are equipped with sensors and cameras and are connected through a wireless backbone. When an intruder crosses the barriers, the system can quickly identify the event by cameras. In addition to detecting intruders, the deployed cameras can also detect if workers are wearing uniforms. We implement a prototyping system that contains four modules to accomplish the above features. We install the implemented system in a real field and conduct experiments to evaluate of our designs. The results indicate that the prototyping system can achieve our design goals.
