Using Direct Links in Wireless Sensor Networks to Reduce Energy Consumption

To ensure data security and privacy when collecting data in an ad-hoc low cost wireless sensor network (WSN), random key pre-distribution (RKP) is often used to establish secure communication links in WSN. RKP is compromised by node capture attack (NCA), which attackers capture sensor nodes to collect keys for intercepting secure links among other uncompromised sensor nodes. Thus, the hash chain based RKP (HRKP) based on light weight cryptography is according proposed to tackle NCA problem. As we know, the energy consumption is an important concern for WSN. In this paper, we adopt the notion of direct link (DL) in HRKP to propose HRKPDL for reducing energy consumption and ensuring security.
