Analysis of the Photobiological Impact of LED Light Sources in the Context of Standardization Requirements for Reduction of Blue Light Emission

The report examines the photobiological impact and, in particular, the emission of blue light from LED sources according to IEC (EN) 60598-1:2020 “Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements and tests” and EN 62471:2009 “Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp system”. Visible light in the range 380 to 770 nm with a higher content of blue light can have a negative impact on biological circadian rhythms associated with larger changes such as “day and night”, which inevitably has a direct impact on the psychological, the physiological, and in some cases the health condition of a human. The light sources with a high color temperature excite the hormone cortisol, called the hormone of stress, and those with low levels of color temperature (warm colors) excite the hormone melatonin, called the hormone of sleep. These dependencies are well known and they are used in the selection of sources with optimal color temperature depending on the work activities in the premises. A significant interest is the question regarding the achievment of different color temperatures with different percenttage composition of blue light, which represents a direct health hazard due to the possibility of accelerated damage to the retina of the human eye [1]–[3].
