Optimal Distributed Energy Resources Sizing for Behind-the-Meter Applications in Presence of Electric Vehicle Charging Load

Increasing penetration of electric vehicle (EV) charging load presents challenges in optimally sizing microgrid distributed energy resources (DER) for performing behind the meter applications. This paper proposes a method to generate the most likely EV charging load profile for a site considering the number of chargers planned to be installed, their ratings, EV battery size and on/off-board charger rating and progressively estimating the state of charge of EV battery at the time of charging start. This paper also proposes a method to size DERs for optimally performing behind-the-meter applications in a microgrid considering the generated EV charging load profile, the EV charging cost, capability of managed charging of EV loads if needed and the uncertainties of charging start time. The method is demonstrated through a test case of sizing battery energy storage system for performing behind the meter applications for an industrial facility located in the city of Irvine, USA.
