Adaptive Electric Vehicle Charging Method to Improve the Battery Life

The Conventional vehicles are being replaced by the Electric vehicles. An effective battery charging system is crucial to the development of EVs. The safe state of batteries is defined as the 40% to 80% state of the battery percentage. Charging a battery above 80% increases the risk of damage, which leads to adverse reactions on the life cycle of the battery, and once the battery is charged to 100% and is in an idle state, it starts self-discharging, which results in energy wastage. This work proposes a charging strategy to prolong the battery lifetime by introducing certain charging patterns based on the battery percentage and SOC while charging to keep the battery in the range of 40% to 80% of charge for a longer period, which will result in increased battery capacity and an increased number of battery life cycles by improving the state of health of the battery.The analysis shows that the temperature profile, the SOH profile, and other features, like the improvement in the number of life cycles and the battery efficiency of a battery charged using the proposed charging strategy, compared with a standard constant current, constant voltage battery charging system. It is inferred that the Battery capacity decay is decreased by 10%.
