Stability Assessment in Power Systems with High Penetration of Converter-based Generation

This paper presents a study of the integration of converter-interfaced generation (CIG) in power systems, assessment of their impact and the associated stability issues. To achieve this, an aggregated model that represents three of the most well-known generation technologies has been developed: synchronous generators, grid-following and grid-forming generators. This allows to set the penetration level of each technology when carrying out power system studies. Firstly, small-signal stability analysis is carried out. Then, EMT simulation studies are carried out in IEEE 118-bus test system, considering different penetration levels of CIG. Results obtained in the paper show the challenges related to the integration of CIG technologies into conventional power systems. However, they also demonstrate the ability of CIG to operate without the presence of synchronous generation.
