Integrated Planning of Active Distribution Systems and Charging Stations for Plug-in Electric Vehicles Considering the Vehicular Traffic Network

To ensure the system's operation is not compro-mised by the high electrical energy demand of charging plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), the distribution system and the electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) must be designed simultane-ously. Furthermore, as easy access to EVCS is critical for wide-spread PEV adoption, the vehicular traffic network plays an es-sential role in the location planning of such infrastructures. This paper proposes a novel framework for planning distribution systems and EVCS considering the vehicular traffic network. The planning process consists of two stages. In the first stage, a mul-ticriteria spatial analysis algorithm is employed to identify candidate nodes for EVCS installation, using spatial data on both the distribution system and the vehicular traffic network, as well as a variety of preference criteria and land use restrictions. In the second stage, a mathematical optimization model is used to determine the best location for EVCS installation based on the results of the first stage and the physical and operational characteristics of the distribution system. The investment plan for network assets in the distribution system, which are needed to support the new load, is also determined by this model. The per-formance of the proposed approach is assessed using geospatial data from a medium-sized Brazilian city.
