A GIS-based Approach for Optimal Electric Vehicles Charging Stations Deployment

The optimal deployment of Electric Vehicles charging stations is an important problem that should be faced in the future due to their strong increase. The charging infrastructure should be designed to maximize the user satisfaction: public or private companies should identify an effective deployment strategy to be competitive in the market. In this context, Evolutionary Algorithms can provide an effective and flexible tool for identifying the optimal deployment of charging stations. The flexibility of these algorithms make them suitable for the implementation of several constraints and performance parameters. In this work, a recently developed Evolutionary Algorithm, named Social Network Optimization, has been implemented for identifying the optimal charging stations placement considering the residential density in the cities for the computation of Quality-of-Service parameter. The method has been applied in different Italian cities, also considering the presence of already installed charging stations.
