Application of Consensus Algorithm in Clustering of Distributed Generation Systems for Wide-Area Management and Control

This paper proposes a method to integrate Distributed Generation (DG) systems into wide-area management and control applications. The approach unifies DG systems in distribution grids using a consensus-based algorithm to form clusters that can provide bulk ancillary services to the transmission network. The unified DG clusters are integrated into a hierarchical control structure with wide-area management and control systems to implement a stabilizing wide-area control strategy to improve transient stability of post-fault power systems. The approach is demonstrated by applying the wide-area control strategy to Kundur's two-area four-machine test system, showing its effectiveness in improving first swing and damping stability of the system.
