Assessing the Impact of Eco-ADAS Systems on Vehicle Fuel Consumption and Emissions at Signalised Intersections

In this work, we evaluate the impact of an advanced driver assistance technology, called eco-ADAS, which aims to promote and facilitate eco-driving by car users approaching signalised intersections. The methodology proposed in this paper can simulate the operation of eco-ADAS and evaluate the benefits in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, which can be obtained by optimising the speed profile of a vehicle approaching an intersection. This method identifies the optimal eco-driving scenario to maximise fuel and emissions savings. The presence of infeasible scenarios, where no action is useful, is also considered; in these cases, no strategies are communicated to the driver. All the possible scenarios in a test case are explored; numerical results show that significant savings are possible, up to 33 % in the best cases.
