Image-based Questionnaires on Mobile Devices – User Interaction Design

Image evaluation as a process in which a user answers a question based on the previous preview of an image, can be found in various fields such as medicine, marketing, education, UX/UI design, etc. Quite often, questionnaires that are important in themselves for reaching certain conclusions contain an image as part of a question. When it comes to specific areas and uses for the desktop computer, considerable attention has been paid to designing image-based questionnaires. However, it has been noted that there is a lack of clear guidelines on how they should be designed for mobile devices. Mobile devices are small computers with a very high computing power and portability which gives users the possibility to evaluate images anywhere. The main problem when it comes to evaluating images on mobile devices is their screen size. After analysing free software tools for creating image-based questionnaires on mobile devices, we have defined four use-cases of image evaluation on mobile devices. In accordance with best practises for user interaction on mobile devices, we have designed interaction flow diagrams for all use-cases. We evaluated our designs with a group of users and the evaluation showed that our designs are intuitive and easy to use.
