eHealth Leadership in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Rapid Review

Significant efforts are being made by governments, the private sector and academia through research, innovation and collaborative partnerships to strengthen health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the World Health Organisation, technology and leadership are critical pillars to build resilient health systems. In Sub-Saharan Africa, eHealth leadership practices required to transform the business processes in health systems through technology applications are yet to reach a matured phase. A rapid review of published scholarly literature was conducted to determine the status of eHealth leadership in Sub-Saharan Africa. A major finding is that leadership capacity development programs are being institutionalised to address shortcomings in strengthening Sub-Saharan Africa health systems. However, the eHealth leadership relevant to the African context is limited in conceptualisation. It is recommended that policy makers and governments in Sub-Saharan Africa should re-curriculate the relevant career paths of health systems governance and incentivise upskilling for building eHealth leadership capabilities.
