Next Generation RES-based student residence. A case study

The demand for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings led to an increased focus on the use of renewable energy sources in the construction industry. This article presents a case study of a (next-generation) student residence building (SRB), that could integrate generation from photovoltaic (PV) panels with flexibility in operation given by a battery energy storage sys-tem (BESS). The studied RES-based SRB is designed to provide a comfortable living environment while minimizing energy use and carbon emissions. In this paper, the design and implementation of the proposed generation system, including the selection of the PV technology and the battery storage system, both based on high-reporting rate measurement information is discussed. The energy transfer of the system based on instrumentation values provided by a smart-metering infrastructure from the campus grid is analyzed also by performing digital real-time simulations. This study provides insights into the design and construction of future sustainable and energv-efficient buildings.
