Optimal Capacity Planning for Manufacturing, Transportation, and Replacement of Quickly-Detachable Transformer Modules in Substations of Resilient Distribution Networks

Substation outages would need to be considered as part of resilience enhancement in distribution power systems. This article proposes an optimal capacity planning model for substation restoration with quickly-detachable transformers in resilient distribution networks. The proposed optimization model includes the transformer manufacturing model and the inventory capacity for transformer modules in each factory. It also includes the transformer module transportation topology and installation processes which are coupled on a time scale in each outage scenario. A mixed-integer program is presented for optimizing a trade-off between transformer planning cost and the substation restoration risk in outage scenarios. The proposed model decomposes the substation restoration to the transportation and maintenance process of the transformer module, which improves the resilience of the substation effectively. Case studies on a modified 141-bus system and a synthetic 300-bus system verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
