Complexity of meshed and bidirectional maritime DC-System Simulations

In the development of new maritime DC grids, it is often not feasible to use prototypes or test components, as they are rarely available. Therefore, simulations are frequently the only way to perform adequate testing for such DC grids. In order to prevent excessive computation times, it is necessary to carefully balance complexity and accuracy of the simulation. The occurring trade-off between taking risks and oversizing the system is a critical choice. Since novel DC grids have a stronger bidirectionality and additional a certain degree of enmeshment, the influence of these properties on the required simulation complexity is analyzed in this paper. Subsequently, a possibility is presented to determine the necessary simulation depth by optimizing a cost function prior to the actual modeling of the system.
