A Statistical Method for Sizing Storage for Large Wind Farms

Energy storage technologies (ESS) are being used for firming the capacity of the wind farms. The share of the wind generation is expected to become 12% in Indian grid. Large participation of wind energy in the grid would increase the variability on the generation side. To ensure resource adequacy, storage should be deployed. In this paper a generic method for sizing of storage for a large grid integrated wind farm is proposed. This statistical method does not require wind speed time series. The size of ESS is estimated based on the statistical parameter of wind distribution and aggregate load. Since, the size of the storage is depends on parameters of wind speed distribution, if the wind distribution changes the new size of the storage can be estimated by using site specific measurements. In our study we have found for a 300 MW wind farm the optimum storage size of 25.05 MWh is obtained when the wind farm's capacity factor is 37%.
