Next Generation Video Compression Standards – Performance Overview

This paper offers a comparative experimental study of the performances of several novel video compression standards. The standards included in the survey are H.265 (HEVC), AOMedia Video (AV1), and H.266 (VVC), all of them proposed relatively recently, and still developing. For a comparison reasons, the legacy H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) is also included in the study. The performances are measured by a rate-distortion grading, utilizing different bitrates for each standard, and obtaining several objective and subjective measures for the output video quality. The results generally reveal the expected performance differences between standards, corresponding to their complexity; however, there are also some interesting and surprising findings.
