Design of a 2 Bit Phase Controlled Transmitarray (TA) Antenna using Low-profile Metasurface

In this present work, we propose a broadband 2-bit phase-controlled transmit array (TA) antenna design using a low-profile metasurface (MS). The design is carried out with a suitable horn antenna with four different meta-atoms (MAs) each having 90° phase variation among themselves, resulting in the complete phase coverage of the TA aperture. Each of the MAs is a three-layer structure where a dipole (45° rotation) with the corner cut square ring is sandwiched between a Fabry Perot cavity. The present TA work will produce a peak realized gain of 23.86 dBi at 11 GHz with side lobe levels (SLLs) are 18.79 dB and 20.84 dB at 12 GHz corresponding to the xoz plane and yoz plane respectively. The proposed design offers respective 1 dB and 3 dB gain bandwidths of 21% and 30% with a maximum aperture efficiency of 33%. The present design can find applications in radio astronomy as well as space applications.
