Digital to Pulse-Width Converter for Time-Mode PWM signal processing

This paper presents a novel digital to pulse-width converter, designed for the use in time-mode signal processing circuits and systems. The operation principle of the proposed converter is based on the binary change of the discharging slope of charge-based time register. As a design example, a 5-bit digital to pulse-width converter was designed and implemented using a 65nm CMOS process with a 1.2V supply voltage. The digital control code is applied with 5MHz rate, the INL error is small, a full-scale dynamic error 44.7dB and the current consumption is 130μA. The proposed converter has a great deal of potential to enhance the effectiveness and performance of time-mode signal processing systems. The proposed converter has the ability to precisely control the pulse duration by converting digital signals into pulse-width modulated signals. Applications like frequency synthesizers, phase-locked loops, and time-to-digital converters may perform better as a result.
