Impact assessment of Smart Lighting System for Residential Use

The “Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change” (IPCC) reports affirm that humanity is in the face of a big challenge due to the climate and ecosystem disruption caused by human activity. After the recent developments in light-emitting diode (LED) and even their integration with connected and smart devices, it’s a must to verify that this advancement is on the right path, especially since Lighting is responsible for 15% of the world’s electricity consumption and 5% of greenhouse gas emissions. While this advancement offers an additional comfort, its questionable in term of overall energy efficiency and life cycle impacts. Recent measurement campaigns for residential usage proves that the gain in comfort comes with the price of a decrease in energy and environmental performance.
