Performance Comparison of bridgeless Luo and modified bridgeless Luo converter for EV charging applications

Electrical vehicle technology is gaining a lot of momentum now-a-days. Since a diode bridge rectifier (DBR) is present at its input side, existing power factor correction (PFC) circuits in EV battery chargers suffer from high conduction loss. This limits their efficiency. Moreover, traditional DBR-based EV battery chargers consume a significantly distorted current from the ac mains. As a result, the conventional system has substantial losses, which are evident in the extremely low input power factor (PF) and displacement power factor (DPF) PQ indices. Front-end PFC effectively uses bridgeless (BL) converters to address these problems. Conduction losses greatly decrease due to eliminating DBR and current conduction through comparatively few devices. PFC converters are crucial for maintaining power quality standards on the supply side. In this paper, two bridgeless converters are chosen for study: BL Luo converter and modified BL Luo (MBL Luo) converter. The performance of bridgeless converters for EV charging applications is compared in terms of voltage stress across the switch, current stress across the switch, THD, power factor, and complexity. The results are obtained using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
