A Cost-Effective and Energy Optimized Scheme for Electricity Generation Using Tidal Upsurge at Kutubdia, Bangladesh

Tidal energy offers a great commitment to bulk power generation without drastically harming the environment by emitting GHG or depleting fossil fuels like conventional methods. This form of energy has an enormous prospect in electrical energy generation as well as the economic development of a region. The electricity crisis is a common scene in the coastal region of Bangladesh and the construction of a dam at Kutubdia channel can make the maximum use of tidal energy available to mitigate the crisis. This paper presents an energy generation scheme and financial analysis for constructing a hydroelectricity project at the Kutubdia channel. A channel of 15.32 km in length and 2.7 km in width surrounding an area of 41.364 km
²
has been selected for harnessing energy from the sea tide. A probability density function (PDF) has been developed to get the proper idea about the range of monthly tidal heads available and usable energy that can be generated yearly from the proposed project. The amount of energy generation yearly by the proposed scheme tends to be 0.20% of the total generation of BPDB (2020-2021). The financial viability analysis is also performed in this paper.
