Probabilistic model for minimizing delay in Vehicular Networks

A roadside unit (RSU) is a communication device that is statically positioned along the side of the road in a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET). It facilitates vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication between vehicles and network infrastructure. The transmission delay of a VANET greatly depends upon the relative placement of RSUs along the roadside. However, an unoptimal position of RSUs along the roadside may result in failing vehicular network efficiency. Motivated by this, we investigate the optimal RSU placement problem within the network topology and propose a scheme that reduces transmission delays in VANET. In this context, a probabilistic model delay reduction RSU placement (DRP) to minimize transmission delays has been developed. SUMO is used to create the traffic mobility patterns, and then the suggested method was simulated on NS3. Results show that the transmission delays were reduced by 8% when the DRP model was compared to the other benchmark RSUs placement scheme.
