Performance Analysis for a Narrow-FoV VLC System with Random User Orientation

A VLC system with a LED transmitter and a photodetector receiver with a narrow field of view (FoV) is considered in this paper. The LED transmits data by employing equiprobable on-off keying modulation scheme and the receiver employs the maximum likelihood rule for data detection. The statistics of the squared value of the channel gain of the VLC system are derived for the narrow FoV channel. Furthermore, the performance of the VLC system is studied in terms of deriving expressions for the symbol error probability, outage probability, and channel capacity. Numerical results are presented to corroborate the system's performance and the statistical analysis which show the impact of the narrow FoV angle on the performance measures.
