Analysis of wide-pulse fault locating considering waveform distortion

Since the narrow pulse has the defect of measuring blind area and the wave velocity has a great impact on the accuracy of fault location, a theory of eliminating the wave velocity of the wide pulse has been caught out, which has been verified in Simulink. In addition, since the pulse can be distorted during the transmission process of lossy transmission lines, which can affect the identification of the pulse edge, then affect the measurement time of the reflected pulse to the beginning terminal, considering the pulse edge is rich in detail components, wavelet analysis has been used to identify the edge. Moreover, lossy transmission line models have been established in ATP-EMTP to verify the theory. The simulation results have shown that through this method, the 4% relative error can be reduced to less than 0.02%. Both theory and simulation results have proved that the traditional pulse fault detection method can be improved.
