Shunt Active Power Filter for Single Phase Low Voltage Distorted Networks

The power quality of low voltage distribution system is greatly affected with the harmonic pollution due to the penetration of power-electronic loads. Harmonic compensation is achieved using shunt active filters at the point of common coupling. Shunt active filters injects harmonic current required by load making source current sinusoidal. In distorted voltage networks, this method is not suitable since it reduces the power factor of system. This paper proposes a modified control algorithm based on resistive load synthesis. The proposed method is analysed by performing simulation in MATLAB Simulink. The control algorithm identifies source harmonic current contribution at the point of common coupling and is utilised for calculation of filter current. Simulation results point to the effectiveness of proposed method in increasing the power factor of the system.
