Bioactive PEO Coatings Containing Ta2O5Formed on Mg-Mn-Ce Alloy

In the present study, PEO coatings on Ma-Mn-Ce alloy system containing $\text{Ta}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{5}$ were obtained. The coatings produced in the electrolyte containing 6 g/l of $\text{Ta}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{5}$ showed the greatest values of microhardness (3.4 $\pm$ 0.6 GPa) and Young's modulus (80 $\pm$ 12 GPa). These values significantly exceed the values obtained for the base PEO layer (2.5 $\pm$ 0.3 GPa and $59\pm 10$ GPa, respectively). These coatings also have demonstrated $in$ vitro bioactivity in terms of the apatite-forming ability in simulated body fluid solution. Apatite nuclei were observed on the surface of the PEO coatings since a 1^st day of in vitro testing, calcium-phosphate layer has completely obscured the PEO coatings surface in 28 days. The presence of Si-OH, and Ta-OH moieties on the PEO coatings surface and the release of $\text{Mg}^{2+}$ ions are considered to be the main factors contributing to apatite layer formation. The assessment results show that the PEO coatings obtained on magnesium alloy with the addition of $\text{Ta}2\mathrm{O}_{5}$ nanoparticles have sufficient bone-bonding ability.
