A Miniaturized kW-Level Metamaterial-Inspired Extended Interaction Klystron at 650 MHz

In this paper, a miniaturized kW-level meta material-inspired extended interaction klystron (EIK) at 650 MHz is proposed. The meta material-loaded extended interaction resonant cavity (EIRC) has the advantages of both miniaturization and high characteristic impedance due to the subwavelength characteristics of the metamaterial unit cell and the multi-gap cavity. An metamaterial-inspired EIK is studied based on the proposed metamaterial-loaded EIRC. The beam-wave interaction simulations show that the proposed EIK is capable of producing 650 kW of power output at 650 MHz with the beam voltage of 81.5 kV and beam current of 15.1 A, corresponding to an electronic efficiency of 52.8% and a gain of 35 dB. The volume of the interaction structure is only 0.25 of the conventional counterparts, which is expected to be applied in large-scale scientific facilities such as electron-positron collider and synchrotron radiation light source.
