Orthogonal cutting of Ti-6Al-4V and the effect of constitutive Johnson-Cook model parameters under high speed

During cutting, the flow stress properties of the work material play a crucial role in predicting the behavior of the material using finite element (FE) simulations in orthogonal cutting analysis. The Johnson-Cook (J-C) model is a widely utilized approach in finite element analysis of metal cutting as it can effectively incorporate considerations for temperature-dependent viscoplasticity, high strain rates, and large stresses, while incorporating key features such as strain hardening, strain rate sensitivity, and heat softening. This makes it a valuable tool for accurately simulating metal cutting processes. The bibliography for the same work material lists several parameters from the Johnson-Cook model. The objective of this study is to identify the best set of Johnson-Cook model parameters for Ti-6Al-4V. Specifically, this analysis compares the expected chip morphology and specific cutting force with experimental data from the literature to evaluate three sets of Johnson-Cook model parameters for Ti-6Al-4V.
