Evaluation of Strategies for Teaching Programming in the First-year Degree Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the conventional teaching and learning environment was dramatically changed. As a result, it is critical for us to evaluate and adapt to new teaching strategies. This research attempted to build appropriate teaching strategies to meet various learning styles and provide cultural support. To evaluate our framework with culturally supported teaching strategies, we surveyed 37 students including an indigenous group of seven students. The students were all enrolled in our first-year programming course during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022. The findings show that our framework provides positive support to students’ learning. The contribution of this research is that to successfully teach first-year programming need to maintain our professional proficiency and provide care and support to all learners.
