The Experimental Introduction of Moodle Online Quizzes in a C# Basic Programming Course

Developing and keeping the students' motivation throughout the course seems to be key issues for teaching programming. In light of this viewpoint, we introduced Moodle online quizzes to our C# basic programming course for the first-year students. We found that gamification can motivate students easily at the beginning, but it is difficult to keep their motivation. For some students, online quizzes successfully developed their motivation and kept it throughout the course. We understand that they are motivated intrinsically. However, for some other students, online quizzes led to less motivation, because they felt the quizzes were too difficult. Additionally, we found that some students kept their motivation to some extent, and resulted in low scores. We understand that they are motivated only externally. When the difficulty of quizzes was adjusted to a student level, which means that he/she can find the answer with a little effort using the knowledge acquired so far, the quizzes can motivate the student intrinsically.
