A Simplified Calculation for Motor Starting Time

A motor starting time or motor acceleration study is a wise investment to evaluate the success or failure of starting a large motor in an electrical system. Engineers responsible for conducting this study rely on software tools to simulate the electrical motor starting and its effect on the power system. In some situations, only the motor starting time is required by the engineer, not a full motor starting study. A simplified calculation is proposed which expedites the calculation of motor starting time to provide a good approximation for this important piece of data. To evaluate the accuracy of the simplified calculation, its results are compared to the results obtained from software simulation.
