Development of the Metal Oxide Arrester for the ±500 kV HV DC Circuit Breaker

The ±500 kV HV DC circuit breaker is the key component of the flexible DC transmission system. In order to meet the energy absorption requirements of the DC circuit breaker, the large-capacity metal oxide arrester for the ±500 kV HV DC circuit breaker was developed in this paper. The design calculation of the key technical parameters and the multi-varistor-column parallel structure of the arrester was introduced in detail. Among them, the energy absorption ability of the arrester should reach 180 MJ, and the switching impulse residual voltage should be lower than 800kV. Based on a number of standards, this paper designed a complete set of type tests for arresters and conducted tests to verify the performance of the arrester's residual voltage, accelerated aging, energy absorption, and current distribution. The test results showed that the arrester fully meets the design requirements and was ready for operation.
