An Improved ADMM-based Approach for Decentralized Planning of Distribution Network

It has become a consensus for countries worldwide to reduce carbon emissions. The distributed renewable generation (DRG), regarded as a promising solution to mitigating carbon emissions, poses challenges to planning the distribution network (DN). This work proposes a decentralized optimization method for the DN planning problem. The planning model consists of the DRG participants and DN participant planning models. In the planning process, the DRG participants decide the site and size of DRG equipment by maximizing their benefits. The DN participant is mainly in charge of distribution line construction. The proposed method transfers the traditional centralized DN planning problem to a decentralized planning problem by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Further, an improvement strategy of penalty parameter adoption of ADMM is proposed in this work for fast convergence. Finally, a simulation experiment is conducted using a modified IEEE 33-bus distribution network. The results show that the DRG participants can benefit more from the decentralized planning method, and the convergence speed and computing time are enhanced by 34%, comprised of ADMM.
