3D Magnetic Field Simulation of Generator Circuit Breaker Contact Structure

For wind farms, nuclear power plants and other large power plants outlet installed Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) cannot meet the 150kA or higher breaking situation. In order to improve the circuit breaker opening capacity and speed up the process of arc extinguishing, this paper investigates the effect of a new GCB contact structure on the magnetic field distribution. Using Maxwell software, simulations were carried out to solve for the effect on the magnetic field distribution in the arc extinguishing chamber caused by the grooveless and grooved on the contact surface. The simulation results show that the existence of hollow grooves on the contact surface is conducive to magnetic blowing out the arc and can improve the breaking capability of the GCB, providing a theoretical basis for the improvement of the arc extinguishing chamber structure.
