A Novel Approach for Detecting an Underground Power Transmission Cable Fault without Excavation of Land

The main goal of this research study is to identify faults and unusual changes in underground power transmission wires with the help of a Raspberry Pi model along with a Web Application. The proposed work is based on the fundamental principle of Ohm's law. When a DC voltage is applied at the feeder end depending on where the cable fault is located, the value of the current changes and so does the value of the resistance. Hence, the Raspberry Pi Pico's built-in ADC receives the change in voltage value measured across the resistor whenever a short circuit defect such as Line to Ground or Line to Line occurs. When value is processed by the Raspberry Pi Pico, the fault is estimated in terms of distance from the base station. The LCD connected to the Raspberry Pi Pico receives this value and shows it together with the location of the problem from the base station in meters for all three phases. A group of resistors in this paper stand in for the cable's length. The prototype's fault switches were replaced to intentionally cause problems, mostly at every known meter. Lastly, it is possible to calculate the fault distance. Also, created a web application to track the same outcome as the LCD. As a result, the proposed method tracks the underground cable/wire defect and its position with the help of a web application.
